Hawks and Lakers Tonight

Tuesday, February 17th, 2009

So I think a few Stotts Era writers and fans are going up to Taco Mac/Hudson Grill at Winward in Alpharetta to watch so feel free to join us. I’m betting we end up at T-mac. Now for the preview:

Game: Hawks (31-21 – Won 2) at Lakers (42-10 – Lost 1)
Date: February 17th, 2009, 10:30 PM
Where: Spales Center in beautiful Los Angeles, CA
TV: SportsSouth Channel 53, HD too!
Odds: Lakers – 8.5, O/U 213.5

Last Games
: Hawks 99 Pistons on 2/11 in Auburn Hills
Lakers 109 Jazz 113 on 2/11 in Salt Lake City

Last Matchup: Lakers 122 Hawks 93 2/19/08 in LA

Key Lakers:

Scoring Kobe Bryant (Philly)
27.7
Rebounds Pau Gasol (spain)
9.4
Assists Kobe Bryant 5.0
FG% Pau Gasol 56.0
FT% Kobe Bryant 86.9
3PT% Derek Fisher (Arkansas – Little Rock)
41.6
Blocks Andrew Bynum 1.9
Steals Trevor Ariza (UCLA)
1.5

The Game: Welcome to the first game after the all star break. I think puts it a little bit in the Hawks favor. The Lakers coming off a loss in their last game before the all star break probably won’t remember it as much and won’t be that pissed about it. Meaning they won’t come out all gangbusters thinking that gotta win tonight. The Hawks of course have a good starting five and those five being well rested will give us at least a leg up in that category. And hopefully Joe got all his crappy play out of the way in Phoenix over the weekend. Unfortunately we’re playing without Flip Murray who is going to miss the next two games (tomorrow against Sacramento) because of a family emergency. We here at Stotts Era hope everything is okay with the Murray family but in basketball speak it is a big hurt to the Hawks, as Ronald is clearly our sixth best player. I saw him mentioned in some six man of the year talk on some sites. This means we really need Joe and Bibby to score some points. I think they need to go for at least 45 combine for us to have a chance.

The Lakers are without the services of Andrew Bynum who has a torn MCL and is going to miss at least two months. But the Lakers are 6-1 without him. Either way it helps the Hawks in that we really don’t go deep in the bench when it comes to big men and now they won’t have to be fouling Bynum all day.

Kobe Byrant is on the Lakers in case you forgot and he is easily the best player in the NBA. I don’t think he is going to let the Lakers lost to the Hawks. He is probably still pissed about the Hawks winning in Atlanta next year. He is that good that he remembers random stuff like that. The Lakers start Byrant – Gasol – Fisher – Lamar Odom (Rhode Isand, in place of Bynum) – Luke Walton (Arizona). The key for the Hawks will be to bot let the role players on the Lakers like Fisher and Odom beat them. Let Kobe have his points, if we can shut down everyone else we can keep it close and sneak out a road win. Only six wins until we reach last year’s win total, seeya at the Mac!

Oh yeah and Speedy Claxton is out and this guy want to get back at his old team:
mo

Update: Apparently the Lakers are all pissed off at each other.  Honestly I don’t think this bodes well for the Hawks.  And for some reason I really like the +8 (and the under) so the Lakers will probably be good tonight.  Here are some pissed Lakers:

Game Preview: Hawks/Bullets….The Omni, Atlanta, GA

hawks/bullets

Game: Hawks (29-21 – Lost 1) vs Wizards (11-40 – Won 1)
Date: February 10th, 2009, 7:00 PM
Where: Philips Arena, Atlanta, GA
TV: Not locally, let me know if you want to go to bar and watch
Odds: Hawks -9, O/U 200

Last Game: Hawks 97 Clippers 121 on 2/7 in Atlanta
Wizards 119 Pacers 117 on 2/8 in DC

Key Wizards:

Scoring Antawn Jamison (UNC)
21.4
Rebounds Antawn Jamison 9.1
Assists Caron Butler (UConn)
4.4
FG% Antawn Jamison 46.9
FT% Caron Butler 86.2
3PT% Mike James (Duquesne) 35.2
Blocks JaVale McGee (Nevada) 1.0
Steals Caron Butler 1.6

Wizards Update: Butler had 35 while Jamison added 34 in their win over the Pacers on Sunday.  So I’m pretty sure who the Hawks need to stop to beat the worst team in the league (at home).  But I’m betting we play this game close like we do against all weak opponents.  Unless they blow us out like the Clippers did the other day.  Maybe we will be pissed about it and play well.  Anyways, since Andray Blatche was injured in late January, the Wiz have been starting Jamison, Butler, James, Dominic McGuire (Fresno State), and Darius Songaila (Wake Forest).  Georgia Tech alum and Atlanta native Javaris Crittenton starting in place of Butler two games ago, when Butler had flu-like symptoms.  We’ll see if Crittenton has a good showing this time in Atlanta, as earlier this season when he was with Memphis he got 6 minutes of PT with zero points.  The Hawks have played the Wizards twice this year, once in each city, winning both by a slim four and six point margins.  I gotta like +9 tonight, don’t you.  Unless Bibby plays….

Hawks Update: The official Hawks notes are listing Bibby as inactive and the IV as a probably stater.  I can’t find anything to refute that so I guess no Bibbs.  I think this is good for us.  I would like a W but lets see what else we can do without Bibby.  A lot of over stuff is going on with the Hawks and I am gonna try to get to it later tonight or tomorrow morning so look out for it.  Oh, and Speedy Claxton is on the inactive list as well….

awww...no 'clacks

Hawks @ Bobcats TONIGHT!

Friday, February 6th, 2009

Unless you are the AJC print edition that reported “Hawks @ Hornets”….

Game: Hawks (28-20 – Won 1) at Bobcats (19-29 – Lost 3)
Date: February 6th, 2006, 7:00 PM
Where: Time Warner Cable Arena, Charlotte, NC
TV: SportsSouth (Channel 53 on Comcast) and HD! not sure what channel, let me know if you know
Odds: Bobcats -2, O/U 185.5

Last Game: Hawks 94 T-Wolves 86 on 2/4 in Minneapolis
Jazz 105 Bobcats 86 on 2/2 in Salt Lake City

Key Bobcats:

Scoring Gerald Wallace (Alabama)
16.4
Rebounds Emeka Okafor (UConn)
10.5
Assists Raymond Felton (UNC) 6.6
FG% Emeka Okafor 58.3
FT% D.J. Augustin (Texas)
91.6
3PT% D.J. Augustin 39.2
Blocks Emeka Okafor 1.8
Steals Gerald Wallace 1.9

Bobcats Update: The Cat’s recently went 1-4 on a five game road trip.  That one win was against the Lakers in LA, but unfortunately they lost their best player in Gerald Wallace to a collapsed lung from a hard foul by Andrew Bynum. I am betting the Cat’s would trade the W to have Wallace back in the lineup. They have lost their last three all by double digits without Wallace. Their last game against the Jazz they lost by 19 while the Jazz were without Deron Williams and Andrei Kirilenko. DJ Augustin only played six games in January, suffering from strained abs, but is expected to be back in the Bobcats lineup tonight.  Charlotte also starts former first round Atlanta draft pick Boris Diaw (France.)  He of course came over in a trade from Phoenix, along with Raja Bell (FIU) for Jason Richardson.  Adam Morrison (Gonzaga) also started last game for the ailing Bobcats.

Hawks Update: Joe Johnson is expected to be back, even though we may not need him as the Hawks had a good showing in Minneapolis on Wednseday.  Although we still can’t make free throws with any consitency.

Etc, Etc: Congrats to Mike Bibby, who was named to the All Star 3 point shootout.

Update: Sekou is reporting Joe is out

Hawks @ T-Wolves: A Preview

Wednesday, February 4th, 2009

Game: Hawks (27-20 – Lost 1) at Timberwolves (17-30 – Won 1)
Date: February 4th, 2006, 8:00 PM
Where: Target Center, Minneapolis, MN
TV: SportsSouth (Channel 53 on Comcast)
Odds: Wolves -2.5, O/U 199.5

Last Game: Bucks 110 Hawks 107 on 1/31 in Milwaukee
Wolves 116 Pacers 111 on 2/3 in Indianapolis

Key T-Wolves:

Scoring Al Jefferson (too cool)
22.9
Rebounds Al Jefferson 10.7
Assists Randy Foye (’Nova)
4.9
FG% Al Jefferson 49.7
FT% Randy Foye 86.8
3PT% Ryan Gomes (Providence)
38.4
Blocks Al Jefferson 1.7
Steals Randy Foye 1.1

Wolves Update: The T-Wolves are actually 13-7 in their last 20 games while our Hawks are 10-10 (wow, seems it would be worse than that.)  Apprently, in their win over the Pacers, the Indiana crew thought stopping Jefferson would be enough to beat the Wolves, but in the end, seven T-Wolves score in double figures and won the 4th quarter 38-29 to win the game 166-111.  Said Al: “When teams feel they have to do that to me, my teammates are going to step up.  I have trust and confidence in my teammates to come and take over the game like they did tonight.”  Maybe the Hawks should just play defense on eveyone won.  I’d like to say if we score 111 points tonight we will get a W but the D has been weak lately and hell, who actually thinks we will score 111 without Joe.  More on Joe later.  Other key wolves include Sebastian Telfair, Mike Miller (Florida), and Kevin Love (UCLA), who I have not seen play this year but apparently he is surprising many with positive minutes.

Hawks Update/Injuries: Still having a weak January after splitting the weekend against New Jersey and Milwaukee.  The Hawks did have 3 full days off, but Joe Johnson figured out a way to catch a viral infection over those four days.  Mo Evans has been announced as starting in his place.  Although I’m wondering why we don’t put Flip out there for the scoring, maybe Woody wants the size.  This injury is obviously going to hurt us.  Joe is our best player.  The only bright spot I can seeing coming out of this is the rest he will get.  See here for more reaction to Joe’s injury. Also,  the IV has been missing practice with an ailing relative as well as Thomas Gardner experiencing flu like symptoms and of course ‘Clacks will be in street cloths and may or may not even be in Minnesota tonight.  Hofstra is off tonight, so maybe he’ll bother showing up.  There is good news.  Al is back!  I’ve read rumblings about 4 minutes per quarter but with Joe out I guarantee he plays at least 20 minutes.

Etc, Etc: Id like to point out that this Staurday is cheap night a the Highlight Factory.  I think I am gonna try to make it out, I am in the market for a new 7 dollar and 50 cent hats.

Hawks vs Nets Preview | Joe Makes All Star Team

Friday, January 30th, 2009

Game: Hawks (26-19 – Lost Last 3) vs Nets (20-26 – Lost Last 2)
Date: January 30, 2009, 7:30 PM
Where: Philips Arena, Atlanta, GA
TV: SportsSouth (Channel 53 on Comcast)
Odds: Hawks -1, O/U 196.5

Last Game: Knicks 112 Hawks 104 on 1/28 in New York
Raptors 107 Nets 106 on 1/28 in East Rutherford

Key Nets:

Scoring Devin Harris (Wisconsin)
21.6
Rebounds Brook Lopez (Stanford)
7.8
Assists Devin Harris 6.5
FG% Brook Lopez 48.9
FT% Devin Harris 83.0
3PT% Keyon Dooling (Missouri)
43.2
Blocks Brook Lopez 1.9
Steals Devin Harris 1.7

Nets Update: One of those “Key Nets” you don’t see up there is Vince Carter (UNC) who seems to always kill the Hawks. He made a looooong three pointer at the buzzard in overtime to beat us last time in New Jersey. In that game, the Nets came out real hungover from New Years Eve (even though the game was on the 2nd) and spotted the Hawks a 20 point halftime lead. It seems the Hawks thought that was a reason to celebrate and came out extremely flat in the second half and allowed the Nets to send it into overtime. Still, the Hawks could have won it until Vince did this.  Vince actually has 21.5 ppg, .1 less than Harris, but is dropping over 25 a game against the Hawks in his career.  So maybe we should try to get a hand in his face better than we did against Nate Robinson.

Tonight, the Nets will be without Yi (China), which at least is something that may give the Hawks a slight edge over their recent struggles with the Nets. The Nets last started Carter, Harris, Lopez, Bobby Simmons (DePaul), and Ryan Anderson (Cal), although Dooling takes most of Anderson’s minutes. Should be a good game and with the Hawks struggles the past week or so, coupled with their struggles all year against the Nets, you gotta like the Nets getting 7 points here.

Hawks Update: We got spanked by the Knicks the other night, although it didn’t really seem that way. J Sandpaper went 2 of 10 from the line, which I can assuredly say that I can do better than. The Hawks were 17 of 32 from the line as a team (10 of 20 against the Nets on the 2nd.) That is going to have to improve, especially in the playoffs, where close games usually happen (unless they are played in Boston.) Just so you know, Hawks are 2nd to last (Magic) in free throw percentage. Who would have thought that Hawks would one day actually be significant, and free throws would be holding us down?

Injuries: As mentioned earlier, Yi is out. Eight year man Stromile Swift (LSU) has been out since mid December with ankle/family problems. If Al Horford was playing, it would be a preview of the Rookie/Sophomore Challenge game, as he would be going against Brook Lopez. But it’s expected that Horford is still out til next week. Also, don’t think Speedy Claxton is gonna be wearing shorts tonight.

On to Joe Johnson making the All-Star team for the third straight year…great job by Joe, going three straight years. His stats don’t seem as good as year’s past but they are about the same as last season. He has been having a bad January though, under 17 ppg this month, while averaging at least 22 each previous month. I think this quote can sum up how the Hawks have been playing lately:

“We’re going to keep getting our [expletives] kicked if we play like this,” Joe Johnson said. “We’re playing like [expletive] right now. Plain and simple.”

Let’s guess the expletives. Notice in the first sentence he uses expletives (plural). So multiple expletives back to back. Either way he is pissed off. Looking at the Hawks, we are extremely inconstant, including Joe at some points. But if they can get their heads on straight and just play .500 ball the rest of the year, they should be in good shape. Hopefully Joe’s comments spark the team. The Nets are extremely beatable and the Hawks have to be pissed off enough to win tonight and it will be interesting to see how they play.

Back to Joe, he should definitely be an All Star, as the 4th best team in the conference should have a representative on the team. He has this season and next season left on his contract and the Hawks would be wise to lock him up. I didn’t do any research on why we should lock him up, but just looking at our recent history, just having an all star on our team for three straight years is very unusual and we should try to continue that by re signing Joe when the time comes. Obviously there is money issues involved, but Joe is a guy that has been our best player who has lead us from 13 wins to the playoffs. There is a Newsday article talking about how Johnson would be a good fit to re-unite with Coach D’Antoni. That actually makes a lot of sense and we can all hope it does not happen. Anyways, go Joe.

“It’s a huge accomplishment and honor,” Johnson said. “And not only for me, but for the entire organization. It’s a tribute to my teammates and the coaching staff, because without them it’s not even possible.”

Etc, Etc: Marvin Williams maybe on the trading block, reported by Chad Forde in his “Trade Watch.” It reads that is a “15 percent” chance of trade. I think Marvin has a lot of talent. We see bits and pieces of the incredible talent from night to night. But the Hawks do need something to shake things up and I would not be opposed to a trade if the right deal came along. Thanks to Hoopinion for pointing out the article.

Also, I just trade Sandpaper away in fantasy, along with Tyson Chandler, for Jamal Crawford, Stotts Era HOFer Stephen Jackson, and Mike Miller, so we’ll see how that works out.

Next Game: 1/28/09 Hawks @ Knicks

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009

Game: Hawks (26-18) @ Knicks (19-25)
Date: January 28, 2009, 7:30 PM
TV: SportsSouth (Channel 53 on Comcast)
Odds: Knicks -2, O/U 207

Last Game: Heat 95 Hawks 79 on 1/26 in Miami
Knicks 104 Rockets 98 on 1/26 in New York

Key Knicks:

Scoring David Lee (Florida)
15.7
Rebounds David Lee 11.5
Assists Chris Duhon (Duke)

FT% Chris Duhon 86.9
3PT% Tim Thomas (Villanova)
42.2
Blocks Wilson Chandler (DePaul)

Steals Chris Duhon 1.2

Last starting 5 for Knicks was Lee, Duhon, Al Harrington (20.3 PPG as Knick), Jared Jeffries (Indiana), & Quentin Richardson (DePaul).  Harrington recently replaced Chandler in starting lineup.

Injuries:  I haven’t seen an update since Monday, but Horford should be out tonight, with a Friday (against New Jersey in Atlanta) return the earlist possibility.  Also, Speedy Claxton is not available.
